Alberta Ferretti---Italian, Milano

The daughter of a dressmaker, Alberta Ferretti opened her first boutique in Cattolica, Italy, at the age of 18, and designed her first collection in 1974. She founded her eponymous label in 1980 and showed her ready-to-wear collection on the catwalk in Milan the following year. The line has gained a following for her ultrafeminine cocktail dresses and red-carpet-worthy evening gowns in fluttery bolts of chiffon, draped georgette, charmeuse, and satin. Alberta’s brother, Massimo, joined the company in 1981, and the pair formed Aeffe, a manufacturing company that also produces Moschino, Moschino Cheap & Chic, Pollini, Jean Paul Gaultier, and Basso & Brooke. In 1984, Ferretti launched a younger, dressed-down spinoff brand, Philosophy di Alberta Ferretti (originally called Ferretti Jeans Philosophy).

Ferretti is known for her designs featuring twisting, tucking, and draping techniques. Her style employs a subtle layered look, sometimes showing a hint of hand-beaded gauze which extends slightly beneath the hem of a wool dress. The erotic qualities of the chiffon and jersey(clothing) fashions she introduced for her spring 2008 fashion collection is evident in the look of her dresses. Many of them are cut high in the front and draped low in the back. Her target customer is the cocktail crowd. Specifically the dresses are party frocks, above the knee, and enhanced by rhinestone rosettes and armour-like chain mail. Feretti's collection includes pleated bubbled coats, toga-like minidresses and skirts, and a sparse number of gowns of soft mint green and white hues. The minidresses and skirts were shown with ethereal models wearing metallic gladiator flats.
